Putting your oxygen mask on first, is ok.
When it comes to emotional wellbeing and our own mental health, we’re not always very good at recognising the signs and doing something about it. It is sometimes much easier to focus on what’s happening with others and to help support them with their emotional wellbeing but much more difficult to look within. Take a look at my Science and Triggers section for further information.
It can be tough but recognising those early warning signs of feeling tired, irritable, emotional, eating too much or not enough, loosing interest in your hobbies or seeing friends and family. All potentially can be signs you’re not doing that great emotionally. If this is the case, stop, take a breath, grab a cup of tea, take some time and restock.
Think about what is going on for you right now. Are things ok at work? are things ok at home? Try to work out what is causing your stress and consider how you can reduce it or even remove it completely. If you can’t get rid of it completely, lets be honest, we can’t always, put things in place to help you stay strong. This could be; having time for yourself, going for a walk, meeting a friend for coffee. Doing something, no matter how small every day will help you to recharge so you can stay focused. It will also help you feel less tired and let you keep going.
Remember though you can’t keep going forever, so make sure your stresses are reduced as much as possible for as long as possible. If you are struggling, check out my Strategies to help section for ideas, alternatively speak with your GP.
